Tolkien inspired Jewelry / Keepsake Box - Made to Order
I fought with myself over the design because of the two completely different and opposing symbols - one of the Tree of Gondor that symbolizes the thousands of years of friendship between men and elves and the long history of survival despite overwhelming hardships - birth, death and rebirth. The other being the Black Speech inscribed on the one ring that is an indestructible force of evil that lays wake to death, destructions and darkness.
These diametrically opposed symbols of light and dark aren't something that would normally be seen together, but I came to like the idea because you can't have one without the other. Plus, how cool is it to have a jewelry / keepsake box that infers that what lies inside is all powerful?
The box made from Black and Claro Walnut. The walls are made from Black Walnut and the lid is California Claro Walnut - The tray is made from Quarter Sawn White Aak as are the corner splines. The inlays were carved and filled with mica powder dyed epoxy. The checks / voids in the wood were also filled with gold epoxy to highlight the flaws and tie them into the gold of the text on the lid, similar to the Japanese repair technique of Kintsugi.
